  1. While the Russians launched on an ambitious
  2. program to send satellites and manned 
  3. spacecraft around the Earth and to the Moon,
  4. American space endeavors in the 1950's were 
  5. largely preoccupied  with the build-up of a 
  6. nuclear arsenal of intercontinental ballistic 
  7. missiles (ICBM's), as well as the odd satellite.

  9. The launch of Sputnik changed the pace of the 
  10. American space program, but still the Russians 
  11. were able to send the first man into orbit -- the 
  12. Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, on  April, 1961.
